Thanksgiving

Thursday November 25 was Thanksgiving and we were lucky enough to be invited to celebrate at the home of our neighbours, Ben and John, with some of their friends. Thanksgiving celebrates the feast that the pilgrims celebrated at the end of their first year in America. They had endured a harsh winter in which many of them had died. They were then taught how to plant the land by the native American Indians from that area, and the following year, produced a great harvest, for which they were very thankful! Thanksgiving is the continuation of that great feast which the pilgrims celebrated with the American Indians.

We had a great feast of our own - starting with crackers and dips, followed by a chestnut and apple soup, and finally the piece de resistance: a 22 pound turkey (that's about 10 kilos). It was huge! There were also brussel sprouts, roasted pumpkin and potatoes, a spinach casserole and 2 different types of stuffing. To finish with, we had apple pie and pumpkin pie, with whipped cream. Needless to say we were all rather full by the end of the evening!

So here are some of our Thanksgiving photos from a great evening.

John, and his 22-pound turkey!

The feast!!

I was very thankful that my first attempt to make apple pie (gluten-free, of course)worked out well!

The girls pretend to be Thanksgiving squirrels!

Our Thanksgiving gathering. There were 11 of us at the table - Priscilla, Ella, Jeannie, John, Michael, Eleanor, Pia, James Webb, Sophie and Ben (and James is taking the photo).

  1. This is wonderful! I just cannot believe the size of that turkey - it is absolutely huge! Looks like great company and a fun night. Was Pia able to eat most of the things on the menu? X

  2. Forgot to say how cute the thanksgiving squirrels are! There are lot of white 'feathered' ornamental squirrels around the trendy homeware shops in Sydney at the moment, and a few owls, too, so we always talk about Pia and Ella when we see them!
